July 2008
This month has been jam-packed. We began the adventures at Uncle Will's lake house at Canyon Lake. Will had begun construction on a deck above his house, about 20 feet up in the air. Schuyler was tasked with design and construction of stairs connecting the lower and upper "worlds" - using a ladder and climbing up from the roof would not work for most guests. While the men tackled the project, the girls had a great time feeding deer and "helping". They went through an entire sack of deer corn during our visit! I enjoyed a break from the daily grind and some peace and quiet. The guys did take breaks to play with us - we went tubing on the Guadelupe (cold!) and swimming in Canyon (nice!). He also took the girls kayaking one morning.
From Canyon Lake, we drove to Austin to spend 4th of July weekend with Oma. She lives outside the city limits, so the kids enjoyed seeing all the fireworks set off out in the country. Just standing in front of Oma's house, we could see fireworks going off in al directions. Cool! We also did a little geocaching from Oma's house and met Moses, the goat, "guarding" a cache at an old plantation house just down the road. Schuyler and I had a few other interesting geocaching adventures, including stomping around an old cemetery in the middle of the woods....creepy.
We left Bethany in Austin and took Caroline home. Oma took Bethany to her first rodeo in Wimberley. They also went to the Texas State Museum - one of Bethany's favorite places. At mid-week, I drove to Waco to meet Oma and swap kids. Caroline, of course, loved swimming at Oma's neighborhood pool. They also went to a sculpture garden in downtown Austin and toured the State Cemetery. While Caroline was in Austin, I went with Bethany to an overnight church camp for first and second graders with our church. She and the other kids had a blast. It was a great "warm-up" camp experience to get ready for the 5-day pre-teen camp....which she can go on next year. Yikes! After returning from camp, I went down to Waco again to pick up Caroline and we helped Oma celebrate her birthday.
