SUMMER FUN!!!

June 2006

Yea! Summer is here! The girls have literally jumped into all the fun.  The picture above is at our neighbor's pool.  On the left, the month kicked off with a birthday party for Bethany at the new Lifetime Fitness just down the street from us.  Bethany's friend, Jake, is really into sharks!  Take notice of Bethany's artwork a few frames down...she attended a week-long art camp at a nearby studio.  She had a blast painting, sculpting, painting, using paper mache, painting...did I mention getting messy?  We celebrated Father's Day with a cookie cake, breakfast in bed, and a search for presents (the girls thought it would be fun to hide them all over the house).  The girls and I had VBS the following week - no pics, but it was quite an event....1000 people attended, that's about 250 volunteer staff!  Under the travel theme, the kids learned about Mexico, China, Brazil, Poland and Kenya.

On June 24th, we embarked on our 14-day road trip adventure across the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic. The first three nights found us in Forest, MS; Greenville, SC and Richmond, VA.  We visited with friends in VA, but had a brain lapse about the camera and took no pictures!  The pictures on the left show the girls settled in comfortably in their seats and the view out the front windshield for much of the first 4 days of travel.  On Tuesday, we set out from Richmond and into Southern Maryland where Lindsey's family lived from 1986-1989.  We drove through her old neighborhood and stopped by the church her family attended.  There was even someone there who remembered her!  We headed to DC next to catch views of the Capitol, White House and Lincoln Memorial, but traffic and road blockades hindered our route.  We cut our losses and braved the weather through the Pennsylvania mountains to roll into Grandpa's house in Oakmont that night.

In Pittsburgh, we entertained Grandma in the nursing home every evening.  The beautiful, cool weather made the outside patio very inviting...as well as the playful chipmunks.  They will eat peanuts out of your hand and off your shoes if you are very still...the girls had to practice really hard, but on the last day, the "chippies" really did come right up to them.  We also took in a day trip to the Pittsburgh Zoo...Bethany loved the penguins and Caroline's favorites were the "flalingos"!

Aunt Joan and Uncle Bob joined us for the last day of our visit, having just returned from their son, Neil's, wedding the Grand Tetons.  Don't miss the picture of Caroline and Grandma...captured here is a precious moment where Caroline voluntarily went up to the wheelchair, turned on the charm, and got Grandma to laugh. These days, dementia has robbed Grandma of much conversation and laughter, so Caroline's simple act nearly brought all of us to tears.

Continue the rest of the journey with us in July....
