Michigan Trip

May got off to a quick start for us. American Airlines had a NetsAAver fare to Grand Rapids, Michigan, for travel the weekend of 7 May. Since Schuyler's grandfather lives in nearby Zeeland, we decided that it would be good to take the opportunity to go for a quick visit. This would be a father/daughter trip for Schuyler and Bethany. It turned out that the weekend we were in town was the same weekend nearby Holland, MI, held its annual Tulip Time Festival. This meant lots of tulips and extra activities for us to see. Since it was barely May, however, it also meant real cold water in Lake Michigan... not very good for swimming. But we got to play in the sand some (wearing jeans and a jacket the first day) and walked out to the end of the breakwater. We saw lots of tulips, and spent time with Grandpa at his condo. Bethany liked playing with the trains that Grandpa had in his room. Sunday evening we took Grandpa to drive go-carts. He decided that he would just watch Bethany and I drive. Monday we went to see the Klompen Dancers (girls from the local high schools) perform in their authentic Holland garb. Bethany even got her picture taken with some of the girls and got to feel their wooden klompers! We had a nice trip and got an early (too early) flight home Tuesday so Bethany could go to school and I could go to work. Bethany's trip to school consisted of a van ride, an airplane ride, two bus rides, and fighting Dallas morning traffic! That was a long day!
